22. Lessons of the Tide

Megan was reflecting on how everything was going well at the moment. She was confused when a bad feeling suddenly arose in her. Something is not right, she thought to herself.

“Hey, there’s a kayak with no one in it!” Carly observed aloud, noticing a kayak drifting in the distance.

“Megan, weren’t you and Stacy in a yellow kayak?” J. D. inquired. It became immediately obvious that Megan and Stacy had failed to move their kayak above the high tide line, and now the tide was taking their kayak and belongings out to open water. “And you think I’m trouble,” J. D. said quietly, shaking his head, as everyone rushed to the beach.

Megan hoped they could rescue the kayak and floating bags without alerting the instructors who were camped out of sight. The school had consequences for being careless or losing gear. Leaving the kayak on the beach would be considered irresponsible. Going out without letting the instructors know was against the rules.

Several students gathered near the remaining kayaks to decide what to do. The yellow kayak was moving farther from the shore. Empty water bottles and stuff sacks were bobbing on the waves spreading farther apart. As the light faded under the cloud cover, the waves were picking up. It started to rain.

“Let’s have two kayaks go straight out to get the yellow kayak,” J. D. said, eyeing who was in the group.

“I’m going too,” Megan announced.

J. D. looked at the waves, back to Megan, back at the waves, and back again to Megan. He knew there was no time to argue. Somehow the slap and the kiss flashed through his mind at the same time.

“Get your life jacket on,” J. D. told Megan.

“We’ll help with the kayak,” Kevin said, tossing a life jacket to Stacy.

“We’ll go to the right and collect the stuff out there,” Li said as he and Harry grabbed a kayak and started carrying it to the water.

By then Jana had come to the beach. She could see immediately that Megan’s kayak was becoming lost at sea.

“We are in so much trouble,” Jana said, leaning over to Carly. They had their life jackets on in a flash and were helping move kayaks down the beach. Jana and Carly went out to the left to save a stuff sack and some floating empty water bottles.

Once out on the water, Megan felt the full impact of the waves and the wind. It was the roughest water she had been on. The waves banged against the boat. The rocking and bouncing were nerve-racking. Wind hurled rain at them sideways. Megan wondered what would happen if they could not bring back the kayak. She would surely be suspended from the course.

“Megan, focus!” she heard J. D. yell. “Paddle! Right! Left! Right! Left! Keep going!” She felt her muscles burning. They approached the kayak and made a wide circle to turn around. Megan lifted her paddle to make room for the yellow kayak. The wind caught Megan’s paddle. The paddle hit her in the face.
